Subject: [Klamath County Fire Defense Board] Weather Reporting
Good morning! The NWS usually asks my office to let them know how much snow we
get during big storms because they don't have weather spotters who report in
Klamath County, except at the airport. I'd like to provide them with more data
points across the county. This is not a priority at all, but post-storms, if
you want to send me snow amounts from near your fire stations or offices or
houses, I'd appreciate it.
Tomorrow mid-morning is a good time to do it for this particular event. Measure
away from typical drift areas and structures, in an open area. Measure to the
nearest tenth of an inch. The NWS recommends using a snow board (just a stick
pounded into the ground with ruler marks on it). Kinda hard to put those in
right now though. Also worth reporting are blizzard conditions, which means
wind speeds of 35mph and visibility of less than ¼ mile, for 3 hours or more
(must meet all 3 criteria to qualify as a blizzard).
In your email, include:
· Snow measurement
· Street address or lat/long location (example 42.177278, -121.559784;
you can use this website to convert addresses to lat/long
http://www.latlong.net/convert-address-to-lat-long.html).
· Time measurement was taken
Thanks in advance! The data does help meteorologists with their forecasting and
warnings. Again, no big deal if you can't (or don't want to) do this.
