Maybe in the beginning. But synthesizers now contain sampling and modelling 
technology that replicates the sound of mellotron replicating sounds.

 

In fact...the modern day synths can play back ANY sound you can 
imagine...either by sampling the real noise...or by modelling a set of 
frequencies to simulate that sound.
