Mercedes-Benz hat kürzlich angekündigt, dass die kommende E-Klasse in der Lage
sein wird, auf Autobahnen und Landstraßen das Fahren zu übernehmen. Dies ist
ein weiterer Schritt auf dem Weg zum völlig autonomen Fahrzeug. Das neue Modell
wird im März nächsten Jahres in den Handel kommen. "Wir wollen keine falschen

BMW könnte Elektro-SUV in den USA bauen
BMW will laut einem Bericht der "Wirtschaftswoche" ein batteriebetriebenes
Crossover-SUV in den USA bauen, das mit dem nächsten Tesla Model X konkurrieren
soll. Der Plan, ein Crossover im BMW-Werk in Spartanburg zu fertigen, müsse
noch vom Vorstand genehmigt werden, schreibt das Magazin unter Berufung auf
Unternehmensquellen. Ein BMW-Sprecher erklärte derweil, der Bericht sei

VW plant weitere Sonderschichten
Wegen gut gefüllter Auftragsbücher sieht Volkswagen in seinem Wolfsburger
Stammwerk auch für das zweite Halbjahr Sonderschichten vor. Nach Informationen
der DPA aus Kreisen der Konzernzentrale wollte der Betriebsrat am 9. Juni über
eine entsprechende Bitte des Unternehmens entscheiden. Mit zusätzlichen
Schichten am Wochenende bis zum Jahresende reagiere VW auf die anhaltend gute

Continental kooperiert mit Huayu Automotive
Der Automobilzulieferer Continental will gemeinsam mit einem chinesischen
Partner insgesamt 600 Millionen Yuan (97 Millionen Dollar) in den Bau einer
Fabrik für hydraulische Bremsanlagen investieren. Continental wird sich mit
Huayu Automotive Systems zusammentun, um das Werk in der westchinesischen
Gemeinde Chongqing zu errichten. Die Produktion soll im Herbst nächsten Jahres

Faurecia baut Partikelfilter für Benzinmotoren
Partikelfilter dürften bald auch für Benzinmotoren ein Muss werden. Faurecia
begann im vergangenen Jahr die Serienproduktion eines solchen Filters für einen
europäischen Premiumhersteller. Hintergrund dieser Entwicklung ist die
Abgasnorm Euro 6c, die 2017 in Kraft tritt und für Ottomotoren mit
Direkteinspritzung nur noch ein Zehntel des aktuellen Rußpartikelausstoßes
erlaubt. Die Benzinpartikelfilter von Faurecia erfüllen schon heute zukünftige

Smart Home ist kein Stromsparer
Das sogenannte "Smart Home" der Zukunft soll seine Bewohner im Rahmen einer
intelligenten und vernetzten Gerätesteuerung bei ihren alltäglichen Aufgaben
entlasten. Der Stromspareffekt der intelligenten Haustechnik wird Insidern
zufolge allerdings überschätzt. So sagte Günther Ohland, Geschäftsführer der
Smart Home Initiative Deutschland, im Interview mit dem Münchener Ökostrom- und
Biogasanbieter Polarstern, Energiesparen zähle nicht zu den fundamentalen

Mercedes moves closer to autonomous driving
Mercedes-Benz recently said its upcoming E Class sedan will be able to take
over the driving duties on motorways and country lanes, in another incremental
step that will one day land fully autonomous capabilities. The new model will
go on sale around March next year. "While we don't want to feed wrong
expectations such as sleeping in the car, autonomous driving is set to become a
reality much more quickly than the public thinks," comments Thomas Weber,

BMW might build an electric SUV in the U.S.
BMW intends to build a battery powered crossover SUV in the U.S. as a rival to
the upcoming Tesla Model X, German business magazine "Wirtschaftswoche"
reported. The plan to build the crossover at BMW's plant in Spartanburg is
awaiting board approval, the magazine said, citing company sources. However, a
BMW spokesman noted that the report was "speculation." (Automotive News Europe

VW plans further extra shifts
Owing to full order books, Volkswagen is planning extra shifts at its parent
plant in Wolfsburg in the second half of the year as well. The works council is
set to decide about a request from the company to this effect on June 9,
reported DPA, citing head office circles. With additional weekend shifts until
the end of the year, VW is to react to the continued high demand for the Golf,

Continental to cooperate with Huayu Automotive
German auto parts producer Continental said that it and a Chinese partner will
invest a total of 600 million yuan (97 million dollars) to build a hydraulic
braking systems factory. Continental is set to partner with Huayu Automotive
Systems to build the plant in the western Chinese municipality of Chongqing.
Production is expected to start in fall next year, the company added. (Dow

Faurecia builds particle filters for gasoline engines
Particle filters will probably soon become mandatory for gasoline engines as
well. Faurecia started mass-producing such a filter for a European premium
automaker last year. The reason for this development is the Euro 6c emissions
standard, which is to take effect in 2017. The new norm is to limit soot
particle emissions of direct-injection Otto engines to just a tenth of current
levels. Faurecia's gasoline particle filters already meet tomorrow's emissions

Smart homes do not save much energy
The "smart home" of the future is supposed to make everyday tasks easier for
its residents thanks to intelligent and connected appliance control. However,
the energy-saving potential of the smart home technology is being
overestimated, experts say. For instance, Günther Ohland, managing director of
the Smart Home Initiative Germany, said in an interview with Munich-based
green-electricity and biogas provider Polarstern that saving energy is not one
