On the 10th of July 2008 I got a phone call no one ever wants to get. It was my
mum on the phone and she told me that my brother Asa had a serious accident at
work. He'd been taken to hospital with severe head injuries after some
machinery collapses and he was unconscious in hospital. I then immediately
bought a ticket to Israel, to go home the next day...
Asa is the fifth of seven children. He's 27 years old and has a wife Lilac and
a baby son Amit. Asa was always the "sporty" one, 6 feet tall and a fast hand -
he was a great basketball player, and a great coach! At the same time a very
kind man, with a big smile, and an inner peace, Asa always had time for
everyone.
On that night of the 10th of July, it took the doctors a few hours to diagnose
that he had 2 blood clots in his brain, and we thought we would lose him. At
that time there was only 3 doctors in the whole of Israel able to operate on
his brain, one was abroad, one was unreachable and Dr. Maimon had just finished
a seven hour operation, and was not willing to take the risk of doing another
one.
My family stayed all that night at the hospital praying for a miracle, and at
7am Dr. Maimon came back and said he would operate on Asa. Dr. Maimon has
developed a new and advanced brain blood clot surgery that was not approved by
ANY institution around the world, however 17 out of 17 patients, had a full
recovery, so my parents gave permission and he was air lifted to the Dr.'s
hospital to be operated.
During all that time my family sat outside his room, and hoped for a miracle
even though 90% of people die or lose any ability to live a fulfilled life.
They were desperate Asa would be one of the lucky 10%.
The operation was successful! After 7 days of being kept alive by machines Asa
took a breath unassisted and opened his eyes, and very slowly started to mend.
The areas in his brain that were damaged are the speech function and he lost
his sight in one eye as well as the majority of function in his right arm.
Since the accident, Asa had been undergoing physiotherapy, speech therapy, and
psychotherapy, doing his outmost to get better.
There remains an area in his brain that is "dead" and although the neurons are
still "alive" his brain dose not use them.
We found an amazing solution: hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT). This is a bit
like putting someone in an oxygen tank under pressure. As the treatment is
experimental Israeli national insurance won't cover the cost. If it's effective
this treatment could "awaken" the "live" neurons left in Asa's brain, before
they die.

For the treatment to work, 40 - 60 sessions are required. These have to take
place less then a year since the injury to be effective. That means that we
have only 3 weeks window, before it is too late!
This treatment could mean that Asa would be able to speak again properly,
restore his language and memory, and most importantly to improve the function
of the right side of his body, this could make him independent and able to
support his wife's and son.
Since the accident my family and the kibbutz I grew up in spent every penny
they had on Asa's treatment. Time off work, travelling to the hospital, and
treatment have taken their toll on the family's finances.
Each session cost 400 New Shekels (NIS) that's £67 pounds a pop, and on
everyday of treatment, he will need to have someone to take him there and back
- that's a five hour roundtrip. We've worked out that it will cost £10,000 to
pay for the treatment and travel. Normally we could have got that sum together
but after the last 8 months, everything has gone.
They say: He who saves one soul it's as if he saved the entire world.

ב-10 ביולי קיבלתי שיחת טלפון שאף אחד לא רוצה לקבל.
שיחת הטלפון הייתה מאמא שלי והיא סיפרה לי שאח שלי, אסא, עבר תאונת עבודה קשה.
הוא נלקח לבית החולים עם פגיעת ראש חמורה, לאחר קריסת מערכות הוא היה מחוסר הכרה
בבית החולים.
מיד קניתי כרטיס טיסה לישראל כדי להגיע ביום למחרת הביתה.
אסא הוא החמישי מבין שבעה ילדים. הוא בן 27, נשוי ללילך, ויש להם ילד קטן בשם עמית.
אסא תמיד היה האח הספורטיבי, גובהו 1.85 ויש לו יד מהירה. הוא היה שחקן כדורסל
מצוין ומאמן נהדר.
אסא שירת כצנחן במשך שלוש שנים ולחם במלחמת לבנון השנייה. במקביל היה אדם טוב לב
עם חיוך רחב ושלווה פנימית. לאסא תמיד היה זמן לכולם.
בלילה של ה-10 ביולי לרופאים לקח כמה שעות לאבחן שלאסא יש שני קרישי דם במח וחשבנו
שנאבד אותו. באותו זמן היו רק שלושה רופאים בכל הארץ שיכלו לבצע את הניתוח הדרוש.
אחד מהם היה בחוץ לארץ, אחד לא הצלחנו להשיג ודוקטור מימון שבאותו רגע סיים שבע
שעות של ניתוח מסובך ולא רצה לקחת את הסיכון בלעשות עוד ניתוח.
משפחתי נשארה ערה כל הלילה בתקווה לנס ובשבע בבוקר דוקטור מימון התקשר ואמר שהוא
מוכן לנתח את אסא. דוקטור מימון פיתח ניתוח להוצאת קרישי דם מהמח שלא אושר באף
מוסד ברחבי העולם, אף על פי כן שבעה עשר מתוך שבעה עשר מטופלים הבריאו לחלוטין, אז
הורי אישרו לנתח ואסא הוטס במסוק לבית החולם שבו דוקטור מימון מנתח כדי לעבור את
הניתוח.
במשך כל הזמן הזה משפחתי ישבה מחוץ לחדרו והתפללו לנס למרות שתשעים אחוזים מהאנשים
מתים או מאבדים את היכולת לחיות חיים ממשיים. הם האמינו שאסא יהיה בין עשרת
האחוזים הנותרים.
הניתוח עבר בהצלחה!. לאחר שבעה ימים בהם אסא היה מחובר למכונות החיאה הוא פקח את
עיניו ולקח נשימה עצמאית, ללא עזרה.לאט לאט הוא החל להחלים.
האיזורים שנפגעו במוחו גרמו לאובדן הדיבור, אובדן תפקוד ותחושה בצידו הימיני של
גופו ואובדן ראייה בעין אחת.
מאז התאונה אסא עובר טיפולים כגון פיזיותרפיה, ריפוי בדיבור ופסיכותרפיה ועושה את
כל המאמצים כדי להשתקם.
במוחו נשאר איזור "מת" ואף על פי שהתאים עדיין חיים המוח לא משתמש בהם.
מצאנו פתרון ייחודי לסוגו בעולם: טיפול בתא לחץ. זה כמו לשים מישהו בתוך מיכל עם
חמצן בלחץ גבוה. הטיפול הינו ניסיוני וביטוח הבריאות לא מכסה את ההוצאות של
הטיפול. אם הטיפול יעבוד הוא יוכל להחיות את התאים במוחו של אסא לפני שימותו.

הנסיעה הוא בערך חמש שעות.
חישבנו שכל הטיפול בתא הלחץ יעלה לנו בסביבות 60,000 ש"ח כולל נסיעות.
בדרך כלל יכולנו לאסוף את הסכום הנ"ל מכיסינו הפרטי אבל לאחר שמונת החודשים
האחרונים הכל אזל.
