I wouldn't worry about laws like this to much. There are a number of organizations working with states to educate law makers, and prevent PI laws from being written. They are having success in a number of states. And well...the states like Texas that already have them will eventually be self correcting. As it stands right now, you are required to be a PI in order to issue a ticket based on running a red light equipped with a camera. (Digital photograph) And yes, that was an actual court order. Stupid laws tend to have stupid consequences, and lawmakers get educated real quick. I think I've pretty much made up my mind that I want to work for a while before pursuing my BS, but I do feel that I want to accomplish a 4 year degree. Right now I'm seriously burnt out on school! I don't want to go in the computer forensics arena though, I'm leaning towards computer security, intrusion detection/prevention, data recovery. All my life fixing things and working in customer service has always been my passion. No matter where I worked I always ended up fixing things for my employer lol. It's been since November 14th 2003 that I could work a 40 hour week, I'm ready to give it a try after all this time. You guys be careful though. Idiot politicians are passing a lot of crazy laws. Some of which, in some states, make doing what we do a felony. Watch this video, it'll scare the daylights out of you: Forensics is for Private Investigators Only "Each state has been trying to pass laws to prevent computer forensic people from doing their jobs without having a Private Investigator License. Some states have already made it a felony like Michigan. This is not about Private Investigators enhancing their skills, because this does not change any requirements for a PI to do computer forensics. It only changes YOUR job as a computer forensic specialist by making you work for a PI for two or three years. Your requirements and cost are the only changes." In Texas, even Geek Squad for Best Buy was sent a "cease and desist" letter preventing them from doing any data recovery. Reed P.S. Seriously, watch the video, it's going to impact all of us eventually. -------- Original Message -------- Subject: [kc-cfstudents] Re: Greetings programs! It doesn't seem like it's been that long. Where are you going to get your degree in Sociology? I don't know where I'm going to work yet - maybe one of the new government jobs - something will come up - it always does. Take care and keep in touch. What kind of job are you hoping to get? Right now I'm still working and living in Frederick. I went on for another degree in Criminal Justice and now I'm working toward my Bachelor's degree in Sociology with a Criminal Justice concentration. I'm hoping to mix together all of my degrees and work in some type of investigations. I honestly can't get enough of schooling right now, it's different! I'm FINALLY ready to start my externship in the next quarter, April 15-June 15. Do any of you have any extern site leads that I may be able to pursue? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm so glad to finally be nearing graduation. My only class next quarter is Computer Security on Monday and Wednesday nights, lets say 3:30pm to 10:30 pm. Other than that I'm flexible for any hours and any distance to commute to an extern site. Thanks everyone in advance! Reed A.
