Hello everyone:

Warning: long note!

At Wednesday Night's KARC meeting, it was agreed that RAC bulletins would be posted to the KARC Free List. I volunteered to do it as I receive them. I know there are other RAC bulletins that some people receive that I don't, ie. the RAC Bulletin read on ONTARS Monday at 17:30 local time.

I will post the RAC bulletins I receive individually. However, I've gathered the first 15 into one file that follows my signature. I've cleaned them up a bit by omitting repetitive header and footer info.

Cheers & 73,

Steve VE3KC

ARLX001 Earthquake Strikes Costa Rica, Emergency Ham Frequency
Declared

Special Bulletin 1 ARLX001
 >From ARRL Headquarters
Newington CT January 9, 2009
To all radio amateurs

SB SPCL ARL ARLX001
ARLX001 Earthquake Strikes Costa Rica, Emergency Ham Frequency
Declared

On Thursday, January 8 at 1921z, an earthquake measuring 6.2 on the
Richter scale struck the Central American country of Costa Rica.
The earthquake, with an epicenter located about 22 miles northeast
of San Jose, comes after a series of almost 60 seismic events that
have rocked the country since early this week.

The Radio Club de Costa Rica (RCCR) -- that country's IARU
Member-Society -- is monitoring local repeaters and 7090 kHz. IARU
Region 2 Emergency Communications Coordinator Cesar Pio Santos,
HR2P, requests that 7090 kHz be kept clear of non-essential traffic
due to possible emergency communications dealing with the
earthquake. The ARRL encourages all amateurs to be aware of the
emergency operations on this frequency. US (and Canadian) amateurs
should avoid interfering with Spanish language SSB while using
digital modes.

  Canadian Ski Marathon 2009 - February 7 and 8, 2009

I would appreciate it if you would help me by spreading the word
throughout your local ham radio communities.

Once again the Canadian Ski Marathon is spooling up. This year we
are looking forward to much more "normal" conditions and by that
I mean snow!

The CSM depends on ham radio volunteers to provide important and
timely safety and logistical communication for the benefit of the
skiers. The amateur radio CSM web page (http://radio.admin2.ca)
is up and running with 2009 information and assignments are
already being filled. If you would like to volunteer this year,
please email Harold VA3UNK (radio1@xxxxxxxxx). Although I can't
promise anything, assignment requests are generally first-come,
first-served.

Please join me the second weekend in February (7th-8th) and
help make the 36th our best year yet!

Good Day,

2009 is the 400th anniversary of the settlement of Bermuda by Sir
George Somers. Most local organisations are having an event of some
kind during the year. The Radio Society of Bermuda has been issued
with a special call sign that can be used all year, it is VP9400/xx.

The xx suffix is the operator's call sign, i.e. VP9400/LP. There are
a few novice licence holders who have a 3 digit suffix, i.e. VP9400/NMT.
+Special pictorial postcards will be used to QSL.

We would be grateful if you would kindly pass this information on to
your members through your usual channels.

Thank you for your assistance in this matter,

73's

Rose Spershott, VP9LP
Secretary
Radio Society of Bermuda.

FUNDING CUT ENDS INTERNATIONAL EMCOMM EVENT PLANNING

Regrettably the RAC-ARRL Myrtle Beach Special Event,
planned for mid-March 2009 in Myrtle Beach, South
Carolina, has been cancelled.

Preparations for the event, which was to be a second
demonstration of cooperation between Canada (RAC) and
the United States of America (ARRL) in emergency
communications, had to be halted when Canadian
government funding was suddenly and severely reduced
due to the current world economic situation.

Sincere thanks are extended to all who participated
in planning for the event, including Canadian Consulate
officials in Atlanta, GA and Raleigh, SC.

Special mention goes to Matt McGuire, AF4UZ, ARRL EC
for Horry County, who did so much of the leg work at
Myrtle Beach, and his group of local Radio Amateur
volunteers.

   Hi all,

I just received this via the NASA ARISS Channel. Tom Clark, K3IO is the
originator.

"On Monday, Feb 2nd, 2009, CBC show "AS IT HAPPENS" had a nice ~6
minute piece on the Humber College/VA3JUV contact with a very
enthusiastic Sandra Magnus (KE5FYE) on the ISS end. Here in the
Balto/Wash area, AS IT HAPPENS is carried on WAMU (88.5).

To listen to the AIH audio, fetch
http://www.cbc.ca/mrl3/8752/asithappens/20090202-aih-1.wmv & QSY to a
time ~16 min 50 sec. The ISS audio is really great at ~21 min 30 sec.
ARISS is referred to as an "offshoot of NASA" at ~18:40 and "ham radio"
is said once."

Don Mackinnon, VE4DJ, has become the Director of Planning for
the Manitoba Emergency Measures Organization. A lawyer and
former police officer, Don has been the RAC Manitoba Section
Emergency Coordinator for some 12 years and this week gave up
that appointment in order to address his new EMO role. Besides
his many other contributions to Amateur Radio, Don chaired the
RAC National Training Resource Group, commissioned by the RAC
Vice President for Field Services in August, 2006. Many
recommendations and suggestions came from that Group, with
a number of them subsequently implemented. RAC extends
sincere thanks to Don for his past support and best wishes
in his new post.

The IARU President and Vice President confirmed.

Following a worldwide balloting that ended on February 10th, the
IARU International Secretariat announced today the ratifications
of the nominations of Timothy S. Ellam, VE6SH/G4HUA, to serve as
President of the IARU for a five-year term beginning on 9 May
2009 and of Ole Garpestad, LA2RR, to serve as Vice President
of the IARU for a five-year term also beginning on 9 May 2009.

Mr Ellam, a long time Canadian Amateur residing in Calgary,
Alberta, was until now Vice President of the IARU. He is well known in
the Canadian Amateur administration circles as he has been active
with RAC and its proceeding organizations for many years. He will be

since 1998 and has decided to retire at the end of his current
term in May.

Mr Garpestad, a resident of Oslo, Norway is presently President of
the IARU Region 1. He also has a long history of working for Amateur
Radio at different levels over the years.

Our congratulations to Tim and Ole and we are looking forward to

Radio Amateurs of Canada has a new President

At the February 24th, 2009 Radio Amateurs of Canada Board
teleconference meeting, President Dave Goodwin, VE3AAQ/VO1AU,
announced that he was resigning his position effective
immediately. Dave indicated that his decision was motivated
by his inability to devote enough time to RAC affairs because
of a recent increase in personal and professional
responsibilities.

Dave became RAC President on Jan 1st, 2008 at the end of
President Earle Smith?s tenure. All attending the teleconference
thanked Dave for the time he could devote to RAC?s affairs both
as a Director and then as President.

At the same teleconference meeting, the RAC Board elected Bob
Cooke, VE3BDB, to be the RAC President until the end of the
current term on Dec 31, 2009.

Bob has a long history of working with RAC. His involvement
started in the early 1990s as an Assistant Director and he was
elected and served as RAC Ontario South Director from
November 2001 to January 2005. He was then elected by the RAC
Board as Vice president for Field Services, serving from
January 2006 to February 2009 when he resigned to accept the
appointment as President.
