Amateur Radio Operators (also known as âHamsâ) have been involved in the Manitoba Marathon for thirty-five (35) years. The Manitoba Marathon is the largest scheduled annual Amateur Radio activity in Manitoba. Every Amateur Radio club and organization in the Winnipeg area is involved. This reflects the large public service component of the hobby which includes providing emergency communications in times of natural disasters and in the event of the failure of the regular communication facilities. Amateur Radio operators have provided this essential service for everything from municipal disaster management exercises, flood operations and severe weather events to earthquakes, hurricanes and tsunamis in other countries. Amateur Radio Operators will be stationed at every full Hospitality Station along the race route as well as staffing a number of course vehicles including those providing mobile medical communications.
