Hello Educators,

about the unique mating practices of male bowerbirds, which attract
females by arranging inanimate objects and building intricate

      On the Trail of the Bowerbird
      Learn about bowerbird behavior and more in this interview with a
      biologist who has been studying the species since 1980.
      (Grades 6-8, 9-12)

      Are Bowers Art?
      Watch a video clip that compares a human artist's work with that
      of a bowerbird and decide for yourself whether bowers deserve to
      be called art. (Requires QuickTime or RealPlayer plug-in.)
      (Grades 3-5, 6-8, 9-12)

      Creature Courtship
      Read about the courtship behaviors of bull elephant seals, North
      American Elk, African cichlids, and more in this article that
      investigates some of the enhancements males invest in to court
      potential mates. (Grades 9-12)

      Bowerbird Matching Game
      Match five different species of male bowerbirds with their nests
      and their mates in this online activity. (Requires Flash plug-in.)
      (Grades 3-5, 6-8)

      Teacher's Guide
      In this activity, students compare and contrast various styles
      of bowers created by bowerbirds. (Grades 3-5, 6-8)
