1. TODAY IN HISTORY

The Year was 1962 . . .
and in a televised speech to the American public today,
President John F. Kennedy announced the threat of Russian
missiles harbored in Cuba. The resulting events became
known as the Cuban Missile Crisis.

COURAGEOUS COLONISTS:
http://etc.sccoe.org/I99/CorcolH.htm

Three components to this lesson plan introduce students
to famous colonists. They will research one of them,
dress in costume, and present an oral report. They will
also give clues about their colonists to e-pals, filling
in an American Flag template with a star or a stripe each
time they correctly identify a clue. (Keypal Wanted ads
can be included in the Classroom Flyer Teacher section.
Please write to: classroomflyer@xxxxxxxxxxxxx  with
epals or penpals in the subject line.)

2. RESEARCH AND RESOURCES

THE GREAT MONARCH MIGRATION:
http://www.riverdeep.net/current/2000/09/092900_migrations.jhtml

What do Monarch butterflies do when they sense the com-
ing of autumn? They cannot turn up the heat, so they
must travel in search of warmer climes, as they would
become paralyzed and unable to fly in cold temperatures.
Learn about all of the factors involved in the great mi-
gration to California and Mexico, track their expected
latitudes as the fall days pass, and learn how Monarch
habitats are becoming endangered with encroaching human
developments. Three levels of quizzes on Monarch biology
are also included.

3. ONLINE LEARNING

Welcome aboard. Your voyage should take approximately
two months. Pack well--there is no going back. You will
need to consider an unknown climate and land... and did
we mention that you will be sharing a small space for
the duration with 101 other passengers? Hope you're
feeling friendly... Explore the Mayflower ship here,
and learn the various functions and parts of this his-
toric vessel.

5. LESSONS AND SKILLS

PILGRIM UNIT:
http://www.teachervision.fen.com/lesson-plans/lesson-793.html

Fully seven lesson plans explore all facets of life in
early America for the Pilgrims. From planning for the
rough voyage, to life aboard the Mayflower, to the very
first winter in a new land, to cultures meeting, and the
first Thanksgiving, students will examine this important
part of American history through a variety of learning
activities. Pilgrim fact cards are included.

COMPARING CHILDREN IN MODERN AND COLONIAL AMERICA:
http://www.yale.edu/ynhti/curriculum/units/1990/5/90.05.04.x.html

This unit integrates learning centers across the curric-
ulum, with creative writing and journal keeping activi-
ties included. Students will learn some colonial vocab-
ulary, participate in a paper quilting bee, dye fabric
and dry fruit, and learn how everyday life operated for
children in early America.

NATIVE AMERICAN INFLUENCES ON COLONIAL AMERICA:
http://oswego.org/staff/cchamber/themes/NativeAmerican.htm

Most school children know the story of how the Pilgrims
could not have survived their first winter without the
assistance of nearby Native Americans. But just how did
these indigenous peoples assist colonists? And what were
the conflicts about? After completing research--using
both online and print resources--students will complete
comparison charts and discussion questions to gain a
better perspective on early relations and influences.

mats here for articles, books, encyclopedias, internet,

7. TEACHER'S FORUM

FORUM TOPIC -- CHANGING PUBLIC EDUCATION:
What one thing would you change about public education?
Send your responses to: classroomflyer@xxxxxxxxxxxxx
for consideration for printing in this column.

RESPONSES . . .

EXCESSIVE TESTING:
"I'd get rid of all of this excessive testing we do. You
cannot teach because of all of the tests we must give. It's
gotten way out of control."
M. Cross

RESPONSIBLE FEEDBACK AND RESPONSE NEEDED:
"More feedback from psychologists regarding how the schools
are reinforcing inappropriate behaviors and the response
to recommendations, by the school district, to implement
needed changes; including parent participation."

LEAVE CONTROVERSIAL SUBJECTS TO THE PARENTS:
"If I could change anything about public education, it would
be to restrict the system from teaching subjects that should
be the parents responsibility, for example: the Theory of
Evolution vs. Creationism, and Sex Education."
Angel Smith
North Carolina
Homeschool Mom

EPALS WANTED:
"Can you help me find e-pals for my three classes? I have
thirty 6th graders, fourteen 7th graders, and thirteen
eighth graders. We are just looking for an informal way to
practice our e-mail skills and language arts. We also have
videoconferencing equipment that would be fun to use with
another class. I would like to write once a week if possible.
Thanks."

Deaf Ed. (I've taught Kindergarten for 6 years and 1st grade

Any ideas are welcome and appreciated."
