They cannot turn up the heat, so they must travel in search of warmer climes, as they would become paralyzed and unable to fly in cold temperatures. Learn about all of the factors involved in the great mi- gration to California and Mexico, track their expected latitudes as the fall days pass, and learn how Monarch habitats are becoming endangered with encroaching human developments. Three levels of quizzes on Monarch biology are also included. :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: 3. Send your responses to: classroomflyer@xxxxxxxxxxxxx for consideration for printing in this column. RESPONSES . . . EXCESSIVE TESTING: "I'd get rid of all of this excessive testing we do. You cannot teach because of all of the tests we must give. It's gotten way out of control." M. Cross RESPONSIBLE FEEDBACK AND RESPONSE NEEDED: "More feedback from psychologists regarding how the schools are reinforcing inappropriate behaviors and the response to recommendations, by the school district, to implement needed changes; including parent participation." LEAVE CONTROVERSIAL SUBJECTS TO THE PARENTS: "If I could change anything about public education, it would be to restrict the system from teaching subjects that should be the parents responsibility, for example: the Theory of Evolution vs. Creationism, and Sex Education." Angel Smith North Carolina Homeschool Mom Send your replies, comments, and requests to: classroomflyer@xxxxxxxxxxxxx We will include your letters in this column. Anonymous let- ters are welcome. :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: 8. TEACHER TO TEACHER RESPONSE TO STUDENT READING LISTS: "I wanted to respond to this request. Our school district has had such a committee in place for many years. I have served on the middle school committee for about 15 years. Our district policy concerning literature in the classroom can be found online at our district web site: jordandistrict.org/policymanual The policy manual is online at this site, and it is called, 'Literature Selection and Review'; it is policy number AA424. The lists of approved literature appear on the web site as well, though the middle school list will not be up for a couple of weeks yet. While at times I am frustrated with having my classroom literature screened and approved, it has been helpful at times to tell a parent that a committee of teachers and parents has discussed and approved the book. If you would like to know more about the committee and its procedures, please get in touch with Mary Bailey, our dis- trict language arts consultant." Denise Pfeiffer, Crescent View Middle School, Jordan School District, Sandy, UT HOW THE INTERNET WORKS: "I'm an instructional technology coordinator working in three elementary buildings in a school district in upstate New York. For our intermediate level students, we are looking for re- sources to use to teach them how the Internet works. We would prefer something in video-type format, but would welcome any suggestions you might have. Thanks!" Lori Burch Instructional Technology Coordinator *Please send your suggestions to: classroomflyer@xxxxxxxxxxxxx We will include them in this column. EPALS WANTED: "Can you help me find e-pals for my three classes? I have thirty 6th graders, fourteen 7th graders, and thirteen eighth graders. We are just looking for an informal way to practice our e-mail skills and language arts. We also have videoconferencing equipment that would be fun to use with another class. I would like to write once a week if possible. Thanks." Karen Computer Teacher, New York stamblab@xxxxxxxxxxxx www.rcdaschools.org/stambrose WRITTEN LANGUAGE ILLUSTRATIONS NEEDED: "I am looking for illustrations of written language dating back to primitive times for use by my students." Margo Send your suggestions to: classroomflyer@xxxxxxxxxxxxx We will include them in this column. :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: 9.
