from NBC... <A HREF="http://www.nbc4.com/news/2058735/detail.html";>http://www.nbc4.com/news/2058735/detail.html</A> UPDATED: 7:37 p.m. EST March 23, 2003 WASHINGTON -- There were some unusual goings on in the skies over the Washington area Sunday afternoon, which ended with a small plane getting a federal escort to a Manassas airport. The D.C. National Guard said the pilot of a small Piper plane asked for permission to make an emergency landing at Andrews Air Force Base. That was denied out of security concerns. However, according to the Pentagon, the pilot of the Piper twice failed to respond to instructions from Andrews. Because of the confusion, a pair of F-15s from Langley Air Force Base intercepted the plane and fired flares to get the pilot's attention. Eventually, two Customs Service helicopters escorted the plane to its landing at a Manassas airport. The pilot was being questioned by investigators. There is no word on whether the pilot will face any charges.
