Make a difference in advancing runway safety systems and cockpit design!

MITRE’s Center for Advanced Aviation System Development (CAASD) is
soliciting participation for a study to evaluate flight deck-based runway
safety
technologies. In coordination with the FAA, RTCA Special Committee 186, and
line
pilot organizations (the Airline Pilots Association, ALPA and the Independent
Pilots Association, IPA) MITRE CAASD is developing requirements for advanced
indications and alerts on Cockpit Displays of Traffic Information (CDTI). By
processing Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast (ADS-B) data, this
research identifies display and alerting options to reduce runway incursions
and
collisions in the airport environment. Pilot input is needed to address the
human factors issues.
Participants will operate a medium-fidelity, fixed-base simulator with a 120
degree out-of-window view. Simulations consist of landing, taxi, and
departure operations in multiple scenarios over the course of approximately 4
hours. The study will take place between March 18th and April 4th, 2008.
MITRE CAASD is looking for pilots with all levels of experience, from
private pilots to transport pilots. Simulator training will be provided.
After completion of the simulation, participants will be asked to come back
to MITRE CAASD for a focus group meeting in April, 2008. The purpose of this
session will be to assess the operational experiences during the simulation
and to provide input into the continuing development of alerting and display
options. This will also take about 4 hours and will be scheduled after
simulation participation has been confirmed.
Participants will be compensated $200 for the two sessions. If only the
simulation is completed, a lesser compensation will be provided.
We look forward to your participation. For scheduling, please contact
Charmaigne Burriss at 703-983-2850 or _cburriss@xxxxxxxxxx
(mailto:cburriss@xxxxxxxxx) . For any questions about the simulation itself,
contact Peter Moertl at
703-983-1080 or _pmoertl@xxxxxxxxxx (mailto:pmoertl@xxxxxxxxx) .

Thanks,
