Another program that can download and upload data to your GPS is Quantum GIS (qgis). It brings in your waypoints and tracks onto a layer, and at the same time saves the data to an xml file. Qgis uses GPSBabel for the import and export. GPSBabel can convert your data into a bunch of other formats. QGIS can bring in georeferenced maps and photos onto seperate layers. Each layer has it's own properties, including transparency. I still have a problem getting things to line up properly, though. I'll have plenty of time to work with it once I'm on vacation. Almost forgot. QGIS can bring in shape files (shp). The only shape files that I have imported were the ones that held the 24k grid of the quads in the lower 48 and Hawaii. This was useful for locating some additional DRG's (quads) that I was interested in, as well as the corresponding Digital Orthophotos. BTW, I joined the Geocommunity ( http://www.geocomm.com/ ) to get all my GIS maps, etc. Some things are free to download, but for a small price ($25), you can get 150mb of downloads. The free downloads can be kind of slow, so if you are in a hurry, you can burn up some of you download quota to get a faster download. Other items can only be downloaded if you have an account. The $25 is cheap compared to buying an image off of M$ Terraserver. Before I found the Geocommunity, I bought a single 1m resolution image from them for $50. It was a few years newer than the images I downloaded from Geocommunity, but the quality was poorer. I probably should try and get my money back. ------------------------------------ This is the Juneau-LUG mailing list.
