Hi all, I am still receiving the JHB emails via GMAIL.
Gerry certainly poked the woodpile, is Alistair still out there?
Sorry I missed the Mike,s at Cosford, would have been good to have all of
us together.
I would have stayed with JHB, but with IVAO pulling the plug and this list
all but inactive, plus other commitments, I felt it was time to move on.
I still fly online, on both IVAO and Vatsim, but using X-Plane, MSFS is all
but redundant.

As for JHB, if a fly-in is to be organised can I have some prior notice. I
used IVAO as part of the JHB collective so when they chose to stop
supporting us I stopped supporting them too and removed the pilot client.
Consequently I would need advanced notice so I can reactivate my membership
 and reinstall the pilot client.



With regards to the logging of flights, I’ve no idea when I last booked
one in. If you can drop me an email letting me know Bones/Peter, together
with a link to the booking page I have a raft of offline flights in my FS
Flight Keeper log I can file.

Full marks Gerry for stirring the hibernation straw - look what you've
achieved!  It's so good to see that so many of us oldies are still alive
and kicking.  Everyone who has posted over the last 48 hours has been with
JHB since time immemorial - JHB MUST NOT DIE...!



As Gerry has shown, it only needs a little dig in the ribs for old
passions to be stirred.  Of course, none of us are as active as we used to
be, our mailing list has had good times and bad times but we all seem to
keep going.



Frank, Peter and Fred:  I'm so sorry that we didn't meet up at Cosford.
MiKe L and I had arranged it a couple of months previously and it is
probably our fault for not posting that we were going.  Sorry chaps!



Bones:  Thanks for all that you have done and please keep JHB active, it
doesn't matter that the web-site is out of date but it seems that there is
still a lot of interest from all our old members.  If I can help in any
way, please let me know.



Thanks Peter for keeping the booking site active, I really will try and
'fly' more this Winter.



Paul:  You really do have a genuine doppelganger...  It was somewhat
embarrassing when Mr Lucas and I accosted a poor innocent chappie at
Cosford - we were both convinced that it was you and we were so pleased to
encounter what we thought was a fellow "JHB-er" that we jumped in with all
four feet.  Whoops, the guy must have thought that we were total nutters.
We slunk away with our tails between our knees and tried to hide in the
crowd...

I still fly the odd trip for JHB to keep my hours going, if someone is
going to organise a fly-in I would be happy to join, but my diary is fairly
full these days, so perhaps, if we are going to try it, we should first see
when people are available?

Yes Fred Frank and I met at Cosford.  I wish I'd met the two Mikes, but I
was wearing a CIX VFR Club name badge, not a JHB Airlines one, I'm afraid.
I too didn't think the show was particularly edifying this year. As you
say, lots of expensive hardware, which I can't afford now I've retired,
even if I wanted to. I have 3 working PCs, some Goflight units and Saitek
yoke and trim wheel - the only way I could go from there is more, but I
have enough.  I recently started using a 32" TV as my flying monitor, and
that improved the experience.  As for recency, I still fly about 15 hours a
month, usually one JHB trip following "Gerry's Routes" that he gave us a
couple of years ago, one Maldair floatplane trip around the Maldives, where
I created 30 odd water landings and jetties/harbours for them; the rest is
CIX VFR.  There's enough there to keep me occupied for a long time.

My only flying this year was with a Syma indoor helicopter. It was short
lived though as an overzealous application of collective saw the
disintegration of a ceiling light with glass shards being radially flung
throughout the room. Ladies do not seem to find this funny. Quite the
opposite in fact.



I can only look forward to 2017 because this year has been a weary one. It
has been one of constant care for others and little time for personal
enjoyment. In truth the few moments you get to yourself leave you with
little enthusiasm for enjoyment because you are worn out, a symptom I am
sure some of you know all too well.



I have little news for your delectation. As you may know, Frank Fisher
tried to regenerate some interest in the VA in September but he felt our
ejection from IVAO had been a blow to the VA that could not be recovered
from. I agree with him on the way in which we, and other small VA’s were
pushed out, yet this was caused by the bigger VA’s struggling with
decreasing membership and forcing IVAO to adhere to their rules. The death
knell for us was the 20 minimum active pilot condition which was ruthlessly
enforced and saw us out.



I can understand that the drop in VA membership has to result in a
shrinking of VA’s. It’s a dwindling market, partly because FS doesn’t get
the media coverage it once enjoyed. Part of that problem is MS giving up on
the idea and passing it to Lockheed who don’t give it the marketing punch
MS used to. It no longer stands out as the market is flooded with hack to
pieces games with Doom or Throne in the title.



Although I have P3D on my PC it is old – I guess it is V1.4. I don’t know
what V2 or the newer V3 do to improve the FS experience, not am I even sure
about which license one needs. I presume it is the Academic one at $59.95.
I am still on W7 32bit so I am sure it wouldn’t run very fast. J



Anyway I digress. With the future of JHB looking sad Frank resigned from
the VA on 2nd October. The lack of online participation was something he
missed and I hope he has moved on to find that pleasure with another, more
active, VA. I am sure his retirement will be felt by us all and I sincerely
wish him well for the future.



As to the future I admit I cannot predict what this may be for the
present. At the moment it is a matter of thinking one day at a time and
that magic word called “planning” seems to have evaporated into mythology.
I don’t intend removing my FS or JHB pages, nor stopping this email list,
yet I accept both have fallen into a malaise. They are somewhat frozen in
time with many pages still mentioning FS2004, some FSX and few (if any)
mention P3D. Swathes of the technical stuff is probably redundant now and I
am sure surpassed by others who are more up to date in the FS world.



I have no plans to change anything yet I will listen if thoughts are
offered. Is it time to retire JHB gracefully or keep it purely for
nostalgia? You are all part of what made JHB fun and, in my view,
everybody’s thoughts count.

& I met up at Cosford last month at the 'FlightSim Show' for an enjoyable
day-out.  Whilst Cosford is always superb the 'Show' was extremely
underwhelming... [image: 😩].  I bought a 'TrackHat' kit which, although
I can get it to work, I simply cannot get to integrate into P3D.  I
normally have lots of patience but this thing is defeating me at the
moment.  Grrr...!



For Gerry's benefit:  I had a long Skype chat with Tony Meredith a few
days ago, he asked after you.  He and his wife had met up with Ted &
Margaret Andrews the previous week.  Tony & Ted are both still beavering
away on their Jersey scenery project.  Good to know that you are still
around.

Not sure about Russians but we do have a lot of Latvians and Poles living
in here in Hull now.

To answer the unasked question though, I am still around. Since Tracy
passed away I have deliberately occupied my time out of the house as much
as possible and consequently I don't do much flying these days. When I do
it's offline so I can pause mid-flight and continue later. Recently I saw
ProFlight 2000 by Dave March had been updated I liked that back in the days
of FS2000 so I downloaded the demo and gave it a try. It can be a bit
fiddly getting the parameters right if you include detailed SID and STAR
within your flightplan but otherwise it's much superior to the default ATC,
can be run on a networked PC using Widefs and is compatible with FS2004,
FSX and P3D!
