When you switch to the external monitor does the screen resolution and color depth remain the same? I don't have a laptop and haven't used one with JAWS too much, but I have discovered with a desktop and recent versions of JAWS starting with version 6 that if I change my resolution or color depth that the only way to make JAWS work consistently is to re-start the computer. Then everything will work fine. In earlier versions of JAWS all I needed to do after making video changes was re-start JAWS.

So I wonder if when you check your display settings after switching to your external monitor if you will find they are different and if you could then make them the same as your laptop monitor? Don't know why newer JAWS versions act like this. Is there a way to force your laptop to boot up with the external monitor enabled?Does it help to boot up without speech, then switch to external monitor and enable JAWS? Maybe use Narrator to get started and then start JFW once you've switched to external monitor?

Subject: strange behavior

Hello List:
please excuse me if this issue has been addressed previously, however I
was wondering if anyone might have had this problem before. I have a Toshiba
satellite pro 2410 w9x, 1.9 ghz, 768 ram, currently using jaws 7.0, and
when using the function + f5 key to switch my screen to the external video
out port (to basically shut the screen down to save power), jaws soon can't
read things normally. for example when in a folder with a bunch of files,
when I arrow around, jaws will not speak the names of what I am going over,,
however, as I have jaws announce tool tips, if I stay on a file long enough,
it will read the tool tip. another example, when in a list view, it will not
announce anything as I arrow up and down the list. about the only thing it does recognize is when I move around the start menu, and when on the
internet, of course using the virtual cursor.
this behavior will last until I unload and reload jaws, when it will do the
same thing in anywhere from 3 seconds to 3 or 4 minutes. the only way to fix
it is to restart the computer. This happens in all versions of jaws at least
since 5.1, and does it no matter what my screen resolution is set to. I've
tried repairing jaws, and unloading and reloading the video intercept, but no
luck. I'm suspecting its definitely something to do with switching the screen
to the external monitor, but it just started doing this in the past few
weeks, and I've had this laptop for over 3 years and switching the screens this way used to never cause this problem. alternatively, if anyone knows of another way to easily turn my screen off, with the ability to turn it on and off using a keystroke, that would help a lot.
any advice would be welcome.

Thanks
Lorne
