What? I could not see an automatic link. Is this not available in the basic
HTML view? I've set mine up fine manually, but this might be useful for a
friend who sounded interested in GMail, and this automatic configuration
would be helpful. Thanks!

A simpler way to do this is to get into your gmail account, then go to
settings, go to pop and forwarding. Check the radio button checkbox that
says enable pop and forwarding then go to save changes button. Then go to
the instructions on congiguring gmail with ooutlook express. Then once
that link is established, establish the automatically configure gmail to
work with outlook express. You'll be put in the download file dialog box,
tab over to run and hit enter. Then all you have to do after that is get
into oe and hit alt-t and a for account options. Left arrow to mail tab
Then you should be able to tab over to make account as default or something
and hit enter on that and there you go. I guess it's just as many steps
but I did it and that way seemed easier for me for some reason but I supose
you can do it the other way too so whatever you're comfortable with.

Hi Dan and others:
I don't recall seeing instructions for gmail and OE setup, but I did ask
a question about it. There are two things you have to do.
1. Go to www.gmail.com and sign in with your user name and password.
Your user name is your complete gmail address. Once you've done that,
press enter on the link that says "settings." Then, press enter on a
link that says something like pop and forwarding. Finally, you need to
check the radio button that says enable pop access. Be sure to press
enter on the button to save your changes.
2. Now that pop is enabled, you're ready to set up Outlook Express. Go
into OE, then press alt-t to go to the tools menu, and then press A for
accounts; you do not have to press enter. Next, assuming you want to
create a new account, tab over to the add button and press enter.
Enter in your full name and gmail address. When asked for incoming pop,
imap or http server, type:
Pop.gmail.com
When asked for outgoing SMTP server, type "smtp.gmail.com" (without
quotes). Your user name for both servers will be your gmail address
including the "@gmail.com" part. Your password will be the one you set
up when you signed up for the gmail account.
Once you press enter on finish for the new account, you're not really
finished. Shift tab over to the list of accounts, make sure the one you
created is highlighted and tab to properties and press enter. Now,
press ctrl-tab one time to get to the servers tab. Release the control
key and press tab until you come to a check box that says "this server
requires authentication. It will be unchecked, press space bar to check
it.
Finally, you need to set up an SSL connection. Press ctrl-tab three
times to get to the advanced tab. The first thing you land on is the
outgoing server port number. Press tab one time and you'll come to a
check box that says my server requires a secure connection. Press space
to check it, press shift-tab one time and type 465 into the outgoing
server port box.
Next, tab three times and you'll come to another check box that says my
server requires a secure conection. Press space bar to check this, then
press shift tab one time and verify the incoming port number is 995.
Press tab until you get to the ok button and press enter, then press tab
until you get to the close button and press enter again.
You should now be set to use Outlook Express with gmail. If you have
any questions or need someone to walk you through this, give me a call
here at the Adaptive Technology Help Desk.
