MessageI just installed AVAST last week so cannot answer your question about
the pop-up reminders. When I had AVG 7.5, I never did get a message saying that
this version was going to be out by the end of this month. Had to read about
this elsewhere.

I have just recently installed the free version of AVAST, and when I boot up
my computer, there is a musical note or two that plays and announces that the
data base is out of date. Do any of you get this message with your free
version? Everything indicates that the program is running, updating and
scanning.
