I've used both Agent and Outlook express (which comes free with internet explorer), and I find outlook express easier and more accessible. Agent however does offer some advanced features for downloading binary files from special "binary" news groups. As for a free nntp account, you should get one with your ISP subscription (usually, although not always). Some ISPs don't offer news servers, and you'll need to then pay for an nntp account separately. I think Gigganews is the most well-known news server provider, but there are plenty, ranging around $5 to $10 per month, depending on what speed or bytes transfered restrictions you're willing to put up with. AT&T, known for being an ISP, has a low-cost ISP account for only $ 6 per month (if you already have another ISP which you can use to get to the internet, this AT&T account doesn't provide you with dial-in access), which gives you unlimited email and news server access. The only unusual thing about this particular account is that their news server requires an SSL connection when you're using this type of account (where you access the AT&T news server using someone else's ISP), and agent doesn't support that (although outlook express does). You can make agent work with news servers which require an SSL connection, although you'll have to find, download and install, and configure a piece of freeware called STunnel. In summary (and I guess this message needs it!), check with your ISP first about a news server. If they don't provide it, have a look at the AT&T option which provides you access to email and news services only for $6 per month (you won't do much better).
