my laptop and Windows updates

Hi All,
I have an HP pavilian laptop computer and whenever I have to apply Windows
updates on it I can never be sure when they are done. On my desktop if I
do a say line it will say cancel button so I know that they are still
installing but I can't seem to do that on the laptop. Is there any way of
knowing when the updates have completed?
