No, they are right. Alt plus space followed by dash maximizes the child or document window while the former maximizes the outer or program window.
Try looking through the view menu by downarrowing through it (sometimes the first time you go through the menu you won't see all the options) this is why I say go through it twice. Look for items such as markup and document pane which may have gotten checked by mistake and hit enter on them. They do not react to the spacebar to toggle but rather are just menu items which change their state with the enter key.
Also, check the zoom level on the view menu, it should be set at 100 percent although older versions of JFW required it to be set to 75 percent.

Is the document window maximized? Try Alt dash and then press the letter X. You can have a maximized application running but a small document window. Just a thought...
