Hi Dave,

You're right, Windows key + U will start Narrator and Windows key + R will open the Run Dialog Box for the user to open a program, a drive, a folder, a web site, or a new email message. However, there's a problem with Windows key + U key: Many users get confused because they tend to press and release Windows Key first which will open the Start menu, and U key a fraction of a second later, which will in turn launch the Shutdown program. This will not help start Narrator. Other Jaws users prefer to shutdown their computer using the procedure mentioned above. Often, they rush to Windows key and U key at the same time (simultaneously) to power down their PC. Naturally, this launches Narrator and they end up with two voices speaking at the same time. When they force the shutdown without closing Narrator, Windows will remember to bring these two voices back again when restarted (If Jaws Start First is set). So, I always recommend not to use Windows key + U although it's the ideal key combination for users with limited keyboarding skills.

Thanks for mentioning Windows key + U. I do use it sometimes but I have to confess that it does it to me too, and I have to throw more keystrokes in order to silence Narrator.

By the way, the short cut key combination to start Narrator is
<WINDOWS KEY+U>.

The short cut key combination <WINDOWS KEY+R> opens the command line
prompt window.

Thanks very much for the help.

It was indeed the vidio intercept error. Once I got narrator going I was able
to fix the vidio intercept driver.

Everything is working fine again.

Take care,

Michael

Hi Michael,

To launch Narrator: Press Windows Key + R at the same time. Type narrator and
hit Enter. That's all.

To launch Video Intercept Manager: Start Menu, Programs or All programs,
Jaws60, Tools, Video Intercept Manager.

I have to go now. I'll be back in 10 hours. Maybe someone on the list could
help with instructions on how to use the Video Intercept Manager.

This is Jaws V6.0. There is no other accessibility software installed.

Two further questions. I have not used narrator so how do I start it without
speech. Also you mentioned starting the vidio intercept driver. I have also
not done this before.

  Thanks,

  Michael

Hi Michael,

You didn't mention your Jaws version number or if you have any other
adaptive software using the Video Intercept tool. Anyway, try to launch your
Video Intercept Manager from the Start Menu and see if the Video Intercept is
installed or not. Also have a look at the display info. If the Video Intercept
is not installed, install it. If nothing works at all, try to repair or
reinstall Jaws. The worst but risky case scenario would be to uninstall the
Video Driver itself and reinstall it again. Naturally, you can rely on Narrator
for basic audio input during the whole process. Also, keep Windows System
Restore in mind prior to fixing your computer. Make sure you can return your
system to any available earlier state

    Good luck!

    Adam

This morning I updated the vidio driver on a Windows XP-SP2 system. Now
jaws will not speak. It is setup to start speaking before login.

      Any thoughts?

      Thanks,

Michael
