If the software is not functional as is with all the things that jaws can do, scripting may help and some software is so bad that it cannot be scripted. Jaws is no more powerfull at helping you with software that is not supported by it than it ever was except perhaps for the fact that the scripting language is more powerfull than it used to be but from what I understand, in some ways, it is also more limitting. When attempting to determine whether an application can or needs to be scripted, you should ask your self or evaluate the software and its interaction with jaws can I use this software as is with jaws without a lot of hastle? can I get at all the controlls I need to get to? Let's look at one example. Ad-aware will sort of function without the scripts if you are really good at using the jaws cursor and remember to do a couple of things to work around its issues. However, Debbie's excellent scripting for it makes it far more usefull to the casual user in that it is much more friendly and in some cases even usable where it was not usable before for instance, when you want to remove all the objects it found in its non scripted state, if you are lucky enough to be able to find one of them and right click on it and use the jaws cursor to find select all opjects and left click on it yadda yadda yadda which some people cannot do so it's unusable without the scripts for them you can then proceed if you have managed to set it up correctly as well so that all objects are deleted when you click next. There are other places in the ad-aware application where scripts help too but I won't go into more depth except to say that one problem we have with or without scripting is that we cannot select drives/folders because we cannot read the list apparently and this may not be possible to script. So, if this example and commentary guides you in determining whether a script is needed, I am glad it helped. On the other hand, if your application is well suited to jaws but you want to have jaws do something in a different way, it may not be practical or wise to attempt to script the behavior you want or to have that behavior scripted as it may break something that already works. Before you decide then whether or not something needs to or should be scripted, make certain that the functionality you need is either not present at all or is quite difficult to do if doable at all. ----- Original Message ----- From: "david ingram" <dingram269@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> To: <jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Saturday, July 31, 2004 9:24 AM Subject: is scripting of patch editing software practical? Hi list members, I'd like to know wheter scripting of what are called patch editing librarian software packages is practical for those who use jaws 5.0844? The reason why i ask this question is because some people seem to think that with all of the things that jaws can do now, that no scripting of some software packages is necessary especially the programs that i'm trying to use to edit sounds on my keyboards and moduals. -- To post a message to the list, send it to jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx To unsubscribe from this mailing list, send a message to jfw-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with the word unsubscribe in the subject line.
