how to stop jaws from saying numbers incorrectly

I am using jaws 6 and XP home, and I've tried switching my option to speak numbers in pair and number as whole numbers under text processing, but still it insists on saying, for instance, first when there's just a 1; or 9th when there's only a single 9 without a t.h. How can I get it to speak the number I typed without it adding something to it that shouldn't be added? Thanks.
