high lighting problems

ok there everyone i am having highlighting problems in my email cleients and i

when using the shift and down arrows it will say slected but i have a sighted
friend come over and i asked her if the text was being hightlighted or not and
she said it is not but in word it is and also in msn messenger so how do i fix
this in the email clients and ie?
