Hi all
I've just downloaded and installed the new Windows Live messenger beta, and it's definitely a nice version so far! It reads very nicely with JAWS 7 and all the keyboard shortcuts and scripts work as advertised. I haven't played with the shared folders yet, but I'm interested to see how that'll work as well. There are only 2 very small issues I notice with this version. Firstly, in previous versions when alt tabbing back into a conversation window, JAWS would go to the bottom of the window and read the last message that came in. In this version however, you must arrow down a bit to read the next message. Not sure if that's a bug or a feature. The other one is kind of a matter of personal preference and maybe they've done this on purpose, I'm not sure. But I notice that if someone changes their status from online to either busy/away/on the phone, their name gets moved further down the list and I have to arrow down a bit to find where they are. Again it's not a big thing but I liked how 7.5 and earlier versions did it, where when you had the contacts status set to online/offline, they were all there in a nice line in alphabetical order.
You do hear the person's name, their status like online/away/on the phone/ or whatever, followed by their e-mail address now. So it can be a bit chatty, but that's what your control key is for.
Oh, and the other thing I just noticed...is that when you have someone with a particularly long screen name, it seems to get trunkated somehow. So you might here, Toonhead, who is...has just signed in, even when the screen name was something like Toonhead, who has the new Windows Live Messenger! or something similar. The contact list reads this name fine when you arrow through it, but the online status seems to be trunkated. Not sure if that's a JAWS or messenger bug. Anyways, over all it's quite usable with speech, so if you're into trying new stuff, give it a try. you can go to http://www.live.com and get a link to it from there.
