Hello Douglas, I experienced the exact situation as you did! Exactly! The difference might have been, I could not find my Windows XP disk, so had to call Dell to get one. And I took a friends suggestion and Called A T and T "In-Home" Technical Support, to help me reinstall Windows and do all the things you need to do to get Windows up and running correctly. I did not expect the tech to install JAWS or Open Book, just set things up like he would for a Sighted computer user.
He did not.He was a real creep, I guess my Blindness scared him off, as he installed Windows and ran for the door.
He did not even install most of my "Device Drivers"I use A T and T for my ISP, and I like their DSL and no problem with that service.
However I would not recommend A T and T "In-Home" Technical Support, they charged me $179 for his 10 minutes in my home.
But you and I both learned a bit I suppose. Actually I had several programs running at once--Firefox, Outlook Express, MSWord, Powerpoint, My Computer/Folder Options. At one point I pressed Alt+Tab to changed the focus to another window and my Focus braille display and Jaws locked up; the music I had playing in Firefox continued playing. I tried closing each of my apps one by one with alt+f4, Windows Task Manager, End Program (alt+e), shut down--but none of those steps worked; the music kept playing and Jaws remained silent, the Focus stayed on the same message. Finally I pressed and held the power button till the music stopped and my computer shut off. When I pressed Power again to reboot, my computer started a vicious cycle of trying to Launch Windows, asking if I wanted to start in Safe or Normal Mode, then stopping and going back to the beginning of the bootup process, and the cycle just kept repeating--till I held Power to stop the computer. With sighted assistance I located a message on the screen saying Windows couldn't start successfully, and apologize for the inconvenience. The best solution is not having so many things running at once, and if my screenreader freezes or goes to sleep, and none of the graceful steps for shutting down works, call for sighted help. The helper would be able to close or get things running with a mouse or by looking at the screen for any dialogs that are invisible or inaudible to me. Obviously Jaws or Windows got tied up in knots due to the overload or multitude of running apps, and forcibly stopping the computer corrupted the version of Windows and made it inoperable. I could have saved the day by just being patient and getting help from whoever had the time. Thanks for the suggestions. No way to really know and all I can suggest is that you listen toyour hard drive and make sure that it's not chattering when you press the power button. When I (via a sighted techie) installed a new version of XP on a new drive sent by mybrother, all my old files and programs were on the old drive (which had theformer version of XP) but not the new one; a clean version of Windowsinstalled with the programs transferred from the old drive, but none of theold documents, emails, web browser favorites, Winamp bookmarks, etc. The techie transferred all the files and programs from the old drive to hisexternal thumb drive, then from the thumb drive to this new drive, but not all of them got onto the new drive. Tonight he hopes to reconnect this olddrive so I can find those old files and migrate them to the new drive. Programs can't install from an old drive to a new; they have to be reinstalled or redownloaded from scratch. Why would pressing the power when my screenreader freezes, and nothing elseI try works, corrupt Windows so it can't reboot anymore? I must assume then, it is because some "Cookie" was deleted when the new install occurred. I bet you are receiving this message because of some "Cookie" that got onto your system. If you can find the "Cookie" that brings this message into your system, and delete it, I am sure your problem will go away!
