backing up a program on your computer

how would i go about making a back up copy of a program that is on my computer?
What software would i need to do this and can anyone walk me through doing this

p.s. i would need to be able to have all of the instalition files and all that
i would need to reinstall the software if i did not have my original cd for the
program handy
