avg performance issues, jfw or other issue?

Hello,
I did get avg free addition and installed it on a pc for testing purposes before i put it on the laptop. I really like it's interface, most av programs i've seen, norton and Mcafee have gone to this webpage like interface which in my opinion is complete overkill. I also notice a noticeable lag on my system.
I am however having a problem with avg. It apparently found something on this box, but it flashes up a box and then takes it away telling me of the problem. I am not sure how to fix it. I've also noticed that when it scans and until i actually close the program the system gets incredibly sluggish. This box is a p3 900 with 512 mb of ram if that counts. I'm wondering if there's some settings i need to tweak?
