accessing yahoo messenger from the desktop

Hi all, my problems continue, ha-ha.  When I press enter on the yahoo
messenger icon on my desktop, it does not take me to the messenger window,
it stays on the desktop.  I have to move up or down once, and then press
enter again on yahoo messenger.  I then have to alt tab over to the
messenger window, does anyone know what could be causing this interesting
situation.
