accessing CD

I am trying to access material on a cd but when I go to my computer and press
the D drive I get the message, "Sonic cannot access the drive without
formatting..." When I click to format I get the message that all material will
be lost from the CD. This is new, it never used to be like this. Before I
just typed D: into the machine and the material from the CD appeared on screen.
What's going on and how can I access the material on the CD? Judith
