I understand that belief because I do not told you the complete information about magic jack. But you give a chance to yourself in reading in their website. to ad your intrest about magic jack, you dont need to carry telephone unit if you dont want because it has option to use a software which is included everytime you flag in the device. That means, you have your choice to use your regular speaker and microphone or you flag a headset with mike included. Thank you for suggesting Magic Jack.

However, I do not want to go that route because, that would mean having to
carry a phone as well.  And that is what I am trying to avoid.

I carry enough crap in my computer bag as it is, without adding a phone as
well.
