Hi Janet,
I often help some of our schools when they need to purchase adaptive
equipment. They also call me when they have troubleshooting problems. The
main problem is when Jaws doesn't talk at all in a brand new computer. In
fact, even Kurzweil, ZoomText, etc will not talk in some system situations.
Some motherboards have a built-in sound card which works fine for music,
etc, but they have compatibility problems with adaptive software. Sometimes,
we have to buy a compatible sound card like SoundBlaster to fix the problem.
I also have a chance every year to revisit all adaptive system requirements
via developer web pages, and often I notice that they tend to be very
generous. In fact, they enlarge the requirement spectrum so that old-system
users can install their new product. The problem is that often users have to
face slow processing reaction, especially when their computer is
supercharged with applications. Normally, each developer has a list of
system requirements on their web page as well as an installation manual. I
recommend to stay away from minimum requirements no matter what, and it's
far better to have the vendor deal with the installation. Many vendors build
their own computers. They can download a Jaws free demo whenever they want
in order to test their motherboard reaction on the spot. And if it doesn't
work, they can always try another one or grab a soundcard and install it
while the chassis is still open. Jaws system requirements are provided on
FS site, but I recommend to send them an official email asking the same
question in order to confirm the info provided on their web page. Web pages
are not always updated but developers have a tech support department and
they are facing compatibility problems daily. So, it's better to ask them.
Some experienced vendors do just that prior to building a new computer. If
you need more hardware/software details as well as installation strategies,
please feel free to contact me off list. There's a lot to say.
Take care.
Adam

Subject: System requirements

Dear Listers,

Please could somebody send me the system requirements for Jaws?
I need to give this information to a school district I will be working
at next semester and I can't find it on the FS website.
Thanks for your help.

Janet
