Mark, Excel has a feature called "protection" which allows you to lock a spreadsheet so that it cannot be altered. I assume this is what you mean when you refer to a spreadsheet being locked. I'm sighted and I don't see any symbol to indicate when a spreadsheet is protected. However, some of the icons on the toolbars are greyed out to indicate they are unavailable. One way you could infer whether an Excel spreadsheet is protected against being changed is to browse the menus; you'll find all the ones to do with changing things are unavailable. For instance, almost everything on the Format menu is unavailable. A specific way to tell if it is protected is to open the Tools menu and go into the Protection submenu. If the first item is called "Protect Sheet" then it is currently unprotected; if it is called "Unprotect Sheet" then it is currently protected.
