RE: Once nice thing about Freedom Scientific

Points well taken,, but I don't think decency and good business are
antithetical. I remember one particularly pleasant experience when I
purchased my current A/V receiver 8 years ago. I came in knowing pretty
much the brand and features I wanted. I asked the appropriate
questions, and soon my salesman and I were engaging in conversation--the
music we liked, favorite components we had run. I bought the unit, and
I think we both enjoyed ourselves--not a bad deal.

Contrast this with a visit I made to another showroom some years
earlier. I was in the market for a second hifi VCR. I asked some
technical questions. Instead of answering, the salesman asked what did I
care; I couldn't see anyway. Needless to say, Dale Carnegie didn't make
the sale.

Wel, I don't. I do not wish to be offensive but, I must disagree in
the strongest possible way to this romanticized sort of warm fuzziness
people seem to think FS has for us. What they do is just good
business. It has nothing whatsoever to do with niceness. Also, don't
equate good business with evil, though. It's just how the game is
played. Most companies out there will let you download a trial copy
of their software either as a full-fledged version or with an
expiration date that makes it stop working altogether after a time or,
as a demo version that is crippled somehow, as in, makes you reboot
your system after 40 minutes? It's bait, people. It's so you get to
try out all the features of their software and then, when you just
can't stand it anymore, you open the old wallet and cough it up for
them. Please, please, do not think that it is done out of the kindess
of their hearts or out of any philanthropic motives. Honestly, the
closest I've seen to a company that does something "nice" for folks
is Serotek though, even they have a disabled copy of their software
which they make available to the public. If you want the full
version, you have to cough it up although, in all fairness, it's way
way cheaper than FS or GWmicro's prices. They still charge something
because they are in business and "one must eat, after all" as the
saying goes.

If you want philanthropic, look at Orca or NVDA. Having said that,
there is one truly nice, valuable and awesome thing Freedom Scientific
has done with Jaws 11 and up. The inclusion of the FS Reader for free
added considerable value to their product. More so, in my opinion,
than that research it option or all the bug fixes from Jaws 10.
Having access to Daisy books through a commercially-produced daisy
player is a big deal and now, we don't have to pay the 70 bucks extra
for it that we used to have. It's still a good business deal though
and not a philanthropic move on their part. It gives them an edge
which is the name of the game. I thought it was rather clever.
