Just to elaborate some here; Google provides you with access to a usenet
news group via a web page interface. This is analogous to being able to
read your email via a web interface, which most ISPs will provide for
you in case you want to access your email and you're not at your home
computer.

I find the web interfaces slow and tedious to use, but, google does
offer one distinct advantage: they have archived all of the messages
for all of the usenet news groups back to the "year ought" (a local
slang expression meaning for a long time!). Ordinarily, a news server
will only keep usenet news groups messages for a very limited amount of
time (say 30 days for example). Google on the other hand has all of the
messages back for a long time, and the archive is searchable, which can
be a real resource once you've found the right group and you have a
particular problem that you'd like to research.
