i can only answer your first question. update your sound card driver and 
this popping issue will be fixed. I use a sound blaster audigy 2 and have 
had no problem whatsoever.
Be sure to use your vendor's original sound card driver I.E. if you have a 
sound blaster card, update your driver from the soundblaster.com website.

  there are people who will tell you to use the gateway sound card driver 
but while that fixes the issue it disables other features in the card. I 
never tell people to do something that fixes something but breaks something 
else. that's wrong to me!
