There is a very useful program, I use constantly called power menu. This program puts whatever program you want into the system tray. Thus getting it out of your way while you are using more relevant programs. I listen to either real player or to windows media player while I am using the computer for other things. I put these programs into the system tray to get them out of the way. I got it from the old
www.jfwlite.comsite. I don't know if it is still up and running. But all the programs there are free for the taking. That program is there, and works on windows xp. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Farfar Carlson" <dgcarlson@xxxxxxxxxxxxx>

Tom,As to the system tray, I couldn't imagine why someone told you not to do itthat way, as I find it a lot more convenient and JAWS is less intrusive, when it's not hogging a place in the task bar and occupying a spot in the"circle" when I Alt+Tab around looking for one of my open windows. I've hadit in the system tray since it was offered as an option. You set this bylaunching JAWS, going to the options menu, then the basics dialog. Tab downand you'll find it "launch JAWS from the system tray". Then you'll need to close JAWS and reopen to put it there. As to the long time with no reboots, I also have this problem. I chalk it up to a proposed notion that JAWS has a memory leak and that after a long timeit just quits or hangs. In your case it may be triggered by JAWS gobblingRAM, and using an application that consumes a large amount of your availableRAM, and thereby crowds out JAWS. I have often promoted the idea of having a shortcut on the desktop (I callit Kill JAWS) that can be easily found with the letter "K" that immediately removes JAWS from memory using the taskkill executable. Then I wait a momentand press Ctrl+alt+j to launch it again. I do this as often as a couple times a day, when JAWS just gets cranky or quits altogether.Shouldn't have to do this, but no real solutions are forthcoming from FS, sothat how I cope. Regarding running Jaws from the system tray, can you tell me why I might have been told not to do this, and how do I get Jaws to actually run from the system tray? Thanks! As I said too, the problem doesn't happen every time I close out of something--just maybe about 40 to 50% of the time. Thanks to you and everyone else for your thoughts on this issue.I'll read any additional thoughts with interest, even though I won't clutterup the list with responses to each post. That would be a very unusual problem. I think you need to check all your display settings to make sure you're operating in the correct resolution, theme, and appearance. The shutdown keystroke for applications (if you don't use file/exit) is Alt+f4. As someone else suggested, I agree that a re-install of JAWS may be needed here. Again I've never heard of a situation where JAWS is unloaded whenanother application is unloaded, and I've been using a Dell Latitude 610 fortwo years before upgrading. This is why I think Jaws somehow dies when I close out of another ap.I don't think it's just a focus issue; otherwise, I think I could get Jawsback as others have suggested. As suggested, creating a hot key for Jaws should work if it is getting kilt. Having a hot key for two versions would come in handy.----- Original Message ----- From: "tom behler" <tombehler@xxxxxxxxx>To: "jaws users e-mail list" <jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Sunday, August 15, 2010 2:47 PM Subject: Nagging Jaws 11 problemHi, all. I have a nagging problem with Jaws 11, that I could use some help with. On my Dell Lattitude 610 laptop computer, with Windows XP, I oftencompletely loose Jaws when exiting out of applications like Microsoft Wordand Outlook Express. I don't understand why this happens, nor do I know how to get Jaws back once it's lost, which causes me to have to do a hard shut-down of the computer when the problem occurs. Any helpful suggestions here would be appreciated. Thanks!
