Don't understand what's happening.

I replied to a couple messages from different people a few minutes ago. Both 
messages are from <senderName> and to: jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxx,

 However when I checked new messages, I found that one replied to the 
jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxx as I would expect, but the other direct to the sender, so 
my response does not show up on the list.

Why the difference?

I use the simple Ctrl-r keystroke to reply in all cases.
