There are a few things to check. Chances are many readers already know
these things, but it doesn't hurt to mention them.

The biggest one is to make sure the view is set to normal. The setting is
saved with each document, and Word seems to remember the last setting used,
so this can change without you knowing it. also, on the view menu, under
Zoom, most people find 75% to be the best value. Make sure that the only
tool bars active off the view menu are standard and formatting, and under
Tools, customize, make sure those tool bars are on two lines. And of
course make sure both the program and child window are maximized. The
child window is reached with alt-hyphen.

I'm sure others will interject as well.
