Microsoft Word Automatic Cross-References

I'm thinking this must be a settings issue, but for the life of me I cannot
think what setting it is.
In JAWS 10, after inserting an automatic cross-reference to a paragraph number,
JAWS would read the number just fine (whether in Print or Normal display). For
instance, JAWS would say "Section 10.5" in the cross-reference.
In JAWS 11, without knowingly changing anything, that same cross-reference now
reads something like "2179J-2lp1-10--1." In other words, JAWS is reading an
internal reference.
If I switch to reading with the mouse (JAWS cursor), the cross-reference reads
just fine. But, it is annoying to have to switch.
I'm using Word 2003 for another 30 to 60 days.
Any assistance would be deeply appreciated.
I work with exceedingly complex, highly styled and formatted Word documents.
So, this is quite important.
