did you try creating a brand new sound scheme? Save it under a different name and leave it as your default. I don't know what I did differently this time, but I confirmed that I could associate the appropriate sound with the event, returned to the filename list, selected default, tabbed to apply, then to okay. The sounds are back. Thanks. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Chip Orange" <Corange@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> ok, next, try changing your windows sound scheme to something else; after you change it, be sure to "test" several of the files which you expect to play (use the startup and the shutdown ones that should be triggered). You should be able to highlight them in the list and there should be a "test" button which will play them. The thing I'm looking for is to make sure they have been removed somehow. I'm using JAWS 8. No, unloading and then reloading JAWS doesn't solve the problem and, as I mentioned, rebooting no longer does, either. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Chip Orange" <Corange@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> What version of jaws are you using? I seem to remember a problem with an earlier version of jaws causing me to lose system sounds as you describe; but if I exited jaws and restarted it (not a full system reboot, just jaws), they would be restored. Does this work for you? hth, Chip -----Original Message----- From: jfw-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:jfw-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Adrian Spratt I've found that whenever I turn off my PC for any length of time, say 24 hours, the usual warning and confirmation sounds don't play when I reboot. I'm referring to the beeps indicating the arrival of a new message, MS's rude warnings that a document already exists, and so on. Also, the XP music doesn't play after I type in my password. In the past, the sounds have come back after a second or third reboot, but not this time. I went into the control panel and then the sounds and audio manager, but nothing I've tried has brought them back. Audio recordings play fine, and that monkey associated with the otherwise wonderful Text Monkey application still laughs in his or her ill-tempered way.
