Logging on to a computer

I cannot speak to Windows XP, though I know it has this same procedure, but I
was told that, with respect to Windows 2000, the three-finger salute, as we
used to call it in the DOS days, was introduced as a way of assuring to the
security-minded that a person (a physical person with flesh and bones) was at
the keyboard.
It seems to be almost universally required whenever more than one computer is
networked together. I understand, however, that the function can be turned off
on your own, personal, non-networked computer, assuming it has standard,
from-the-factory Windows, whether it is XP or 2000.
I believe my electrical engineer son told me the latter. The former was told
to me by a now fired information systems employee at my former firm.
I don't believe this has anything to do with the functionality of JAWS. So, if
you are having problems with Jaws, there is likely another source.
Neither Windows nor Jaws is fully loaded at the time you are prompted for the
three-finger salute.
Hope you had a restful Labor Day weekend.
