Jaws not speaking normal characters, suddenly

I'm working in a Word document and decided to mark the division between
sections of the piece I'm writing by typing three asterisks (stars)at
certain points. I've used this character for similar purposes often,. But
this time, even though if I set Jaws to echo my typing by character, I hear
the stars being typed, I can't find them afterward. Jaws is silent, as if
I'd typed nothing on that line.

I tried another couple of such characters, just out of curiosity. Like the
dollar sign and the number sign. Same thing happened. Now, on all these
keys-- 3, 4, etc.-- the numbers appear for Jaws after I type them. But not
the characters produced by pressing the shift key with them.

I'm using Jaws 6.0. Could this be some sort of glitch in this version? Or
could I have inadvertently set something in an area of Configuration Manager
that would silence these characters, without knowing it, so I don't know
what to look for and reset?

Thanks to anyone who recognizes this problem and can point me toward a
solution. It's really inconvenient not to be able to type these ordinary
characters and hear them with Jaws. I'm sure they're visible, so that isn't
what I'm wondering. I want to know why Jaws is ignoring them, once they've
been typed.
