Jaws help

Friends: Running jaws 5.0 on a Home XP, sp2 machine.
I am having lots of trouble reading Jaws help. I find the index topic, hit
display, hit f6. But then the reading keys produce nothing but silence. With
effort I can get the jaws cursor to read the window but if the window needs to
be scrolled down, it is nearly impossible. It doesn't seem to make any
difference whether the window is maximized or not.
I am partially sighted, so I can see the material is there where it is supposed
to be, but jaws won't read its own help system?
