Microsoft is about to download Internet Explorer 7.0 through automatic updates. As everyone knows, IE7 won't be fully compatible with JAWS until the release of JAWS 8.0. Earlier, I circulated a Microsoft article explaining the various protections MS has built into the IE7 download. However, having just learned that the download was scheduled on my system for tonight, I've taken preemptive action. In case anyone is also anxious, here's what I did.

1. In the control panel, I changed "automatic update" to require MS to notify me of any new downloads. This setting is necessary for MS to give me the options I need on the Windows Update website.

2. I went to the Windows Update page, where I clicked on the "custom" button. That linked me to the page where the IE7 download is listed.

3. I unchecked the IE7 download authorization.

4. tomorrow I will restore my automatic updates setting in the control panel.

5. When I'm ready to download IE7, I will return to the updates webpage and click on the button that reveals hidden updates. Then I'll be able to instruct MS to download IE7.

I notice Richard Sherman has just described another, surely faster procedure for accomplishing the same purpose. I describe this one in case others, like me, are more comfortable doing it this way.
