Focus Lost In Both JFW 9 With Windows 2000

Hi, folks. I need some help with a mysterious ailment that has hit my old
Compaq Presario, which runs Windows 2000 and which has been extremely
faithful in rendering screens accurately using several diferent versions of
JAWS over ten years--until now.

Lately, I'm finding that when I'm in a combo box, or when I am in certain
other lists such as the System Tray or even in some dialog boxes, JAWS does
not read highlighted text or items that may be selected. This has occurred
with JAWS 8 and JAWS 9, and it has happened in just the last three days,
ever since I attempted to update Skype and the JFW Skype scripts composed by
Doug Lee.

The strangest thing about this is that the results are inconsistent.
Sometimes lists and combo boxes, including MY COMPUTER and MY NETWORK
PLACES, are read faithfully, other times they are not. And this seems to
occur regardless of whether I am in the "Windows Standard" or "Windows
Classic" screen view. I have no backgrounds or screen savers running, my
color profile is 32-bit "true color," and my screen resolution is 1200 by
1600 pixels.

This problem manifests itself most consistently in Skype, which I have
completely uninstalled and reinstalled three times. I'm now running Skype
4.0.0027 with Doug's 40C scripts. Doug Lee writes that he has never heard
of this before: When I have signed into Skype and highlighted my CONTACTS
list, Windows repeats its Cord sound over and over again, about every
half-second, until I have tabbed out of the CONTACTS list. While CONTACTS
are highlighted, I cannot tell who any of the contacts is without turning to
the JAWS cursor. I can arrow up and down through the list, but all I see
when highlighting a line is something that looks like:

lbx , 1 of 94

This frustrating phenomenon occurs regardless of whether I use speech output
with my DEC-talk Express or whether I use Braille output through my
BrailleConnect. If I open Skype without JAWS running, I do not get the
repetitious cord sound, but of course I can't read the Skype screens either.

Does anyone have experience with this or ideas about how to solve? I know
there used to be a way in earlier versions of JAWS to fix combo box "blind
spots" in JAWS, but I don't know if what I have is the same problem in JFW
9. Once again, I am using Windows 2000, so cannot upgrade to JFW 10 on this
particular machine.

Thanks and kind regards,

-Kane
