Filling out forms in PDF

Good evening folks.
My wife is a law student who is encountering more and more text in PDF,
aren't we all, she finding it particularly difficult to fill out forms for
her clients in PDF. Is there any practical way for doing this, that is,
writing in information in a blank space, visually obvious to the viewer as
an edit field? If so, both of us would be grateful for any tips.
