Optimizing Eudora Pro Versions 5XX for use with JAWS
To configure Eudora Pro 5.X to work properly with JAWS, complete
the following steps. There are numerous options that you may want to
change to fine tune the way Jaws works with Eudora. However, the options
covered in the steps below are known to have an effect on how Jaws works
with Eudora.
1. Press Alt-T and the letter "O" to go to the Tools/Options sub
menu. You should hear JAWS say something like, "Options Dialog
Category: List Box, Selected
Category Name, X of 28," where x depends on which item you have landed
on. For example, if you land on the "mailboxes category, Jaws will say
something like "Options Dialog Category: List Box, Mailboxes, 12 of 28".
2. If, for some reason, you do not land in the list box, press Alt-c, and
you will then be positioned in a list box of approximately 28 categories,
depending on
the version of Eudora you are using. Pressing Alt-c will always place you
in the categories list box, no matter which field you are in at the time
you press it. You can use the up and down arrows to move
among categories. When you reach the desired category, press Tab to access
the first control for that category. After you have made changes to a
particular category, do not tab to okay and press enter. Instead, press
Alt-c to return to the categories list box, where you can select another
category to configure. After you have configured all of the desired
categories, then press enter on okay. If you press enter on the okay
button before you have completed making your changes, just press Alt-t and
the letter o again to return to the Tools/Options menu.
3. Use the up and down arrows until you hear JAWS say, "Fonts", or press
the letter f until you land on the Fonts category. In Eudora 5.1, Fonts is
the ninth category. Tab through the controls, and set Message Size and
Screen Size to Medium.
4. Next, press Alt-c to return to the categories list box, and then locate
the "Display category (the tenth category). Make sure that the Show
ToolBar control is checked. I would unchecked the next six controls, which
are: Show toolbar tips, Show cool bars, Show large buttons, Show status
bar, Show category icons and Show MDI task bar. The last control,
"Automatically Download HTML Graphics" is optional.
5. Press Alt-c to return to the categories list box, and then locate the
"Viewing Mail" Category (the eleventh category). Uncheck Use Microsoft's
Viewer, Show Message Preview Pane, and Zoom Windows When Opening. The
remaining control settings are optional. However, I recommend unchecking
the "Allow executables in HTML content.
6. Tab to "OK" and press Enter. You may want to exit and restart Eudora.
