Come on Bruce, you are kidding us. I didn't know there was life before Windows. (smile) DecTalk even goes back to the Apple II+ and before and, friends, that was a day or two ago. Way back then that Dec Talk sounded pretty blamed good. It was head and shoulders above almost everything else available. What did the Kirtswild use for a speech engine? Artic and some others sounded just about like the Double Talk does today, sorta sorry. The JAWS voices are pretty good everything considered. You can tailor them to something you can easily understand and they are pretty responsive. As I have said before, had I known about a month before I did that I could put two sound cards on my computer I would not have the Double Talk as Eloquence is far, far superior. This is simply the way it is, as the basic algorithm behind DecTalk hasn't really been changed since the early eighties. The voice itself has a bit more of a human characteristic than most synths, but the reality is we're dealing with pronunciation rules that date back before the Echo and the Apple IIe.
