Copyrights are the property of the holder of the intellectual property until
it has lapsed.  I don't know what that time period is but I know that US
copyrights are taken seriously, just like any other property law, and
infringing on those laws is a federal offense.  Check out how much time a
copyright is valid for, I know its more than 20 years.  After the original
copyright runs out I'm sure it is picked up by the estate of the deceased
artist or another company that has some relationship to the artist.  hth,
